Commissioning a Painting - Let's Paint!
/Have you ever wanted to commission a painting but were too nervous or didn't know how to go about it?
I have been working on several commissions recently and thought to myself, I bet there are lots of people feeling this way. So as I was painting, I came up with an idea for an interactive way for YOU to experience a slightly simplified abstract commission with no strings attached. I also just wanted to share some tips on commissioning artwork that might encourage you to give it a try!
First, a little insight into a typical JWebb commission:
Every commission is different, but I typically ask my clients several key questions to gauge the desired level of abstraction, color choices, mood, and overall feeling they want to have from their custom piece. I also show progress photos along the way and take feedback to know if I’m going in the right direction. Pricing is generally determined by size and I always get the seal of approval and payment before the piece is signed and shipped; except for this one time when the client actually wanted to be totally surprised. That’s called trust right there and brings me to one other MAJOR POINT… Before you hire an artist for a commission, just be sure you like their style and current body of artwork. It will make life easier on both of you! :)
Let’s Paint - Commission a JWebb Abstract:
This is your chance to see how it would feel to commission an abstract with no strings attached...
I’ll be posting the directions below across my various social media platforms instagram/facebook/ and here on the blog, and selecting a handful of responses to paint. These paintings will be done in acrylic and mixed media on archival paper. They will be added to my online shop and available for anyone to purchase - so while the painting will be available there is zero pressure to buy the painting you “commissioned.”
How to play, answer the following in the comments below:
Give me an EMOTION or ADJECTIVE and a VERB or NOUN (This will become the painting’s title and the overall feel of the artwork)
Three colors you LIKE.
A color you dislike. (or NONE)
TAG or share this post with a friend who might like to play! (This is optional, but sharing is caring and I appreciate your referral so much!)
That's it. I'll randomly pick several of these to paint and then I'll post about them and add them to my online shop in the coming weeks. These "commissions" will be simplified in that I won’t be taking feedback during the process, but you’ll get to see how I would interpret the emotions through my painting process. In summary, these paintings will be made based on my interpretation of your answers, but you'll have zero pressure to purchase it. I hope this is fun for both of us and I can't wait to see what I'll be painting... thanks for playing!

Add a beautiful, natural wood, white pine frame with a museum quality, cotton rag, white mat to create a clean contemporary look for your painting.
Select 2 inch or 4 inch white mat.
See images for comparison. For reference, the 4 inch white mat creates an overall size of 20x20 inches for the 12x12 painting, or 17x20 inches for the 9x12 inch painting. Where as, the 2 inch mat creates an overall size of 16x16 inches for the framed 12x12 artwork.
These frames are hand crafted in Elkader, Iowa, and made custom to order. Additional time will be needed prior to shipping, but your painting will arrive beautifully framed and ready to hang in its new forever home.
